Play Dough (Stove top recipe)

This is the playdough that is very popular at the Seedy Saturday Kids Zone.

The cook book is called "Feed Me! I'm Yours" By Vicki Lansky, first printed in 1974.

In the chapter called Kitchen Crafts are the recipes for play dough. This is recipe #3:

-#3 Play Dough (Stove top recipe)

Mix in a medium pot:

  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 2 Tbsp cream of tartar

Combine and add:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp vegetable food colouring *
  • 1 Tbsp oil

*... this is where I make a substitute with the Kool Aid -add your own sugar- packets, but I am not sure about cooking it, so I add it at the end where you would knead it. For the brown I used cinnamon.

Cook over medium heat and stir (about 3-5 minutes). It will look like a "globby mess" and you'll be sure it's not turning out ... but it will. When it forms a ball in the center of the pot, turn out and kneed it on a lightly floured surface. Store in an air tight container or plastic bag. Edible but not as tasty as recipe #2 (Peanut Butter play dough)-not included here,
