Garden Coordinator - Oriole Peanut Community Garden
Working Women Community Centre is a community settlement agency providing community development, counseling, support groups, employment services, language, skills and employment training programs to immigrant women and their families. All staff of the agency are responsible for demonstrating support and commitment to the mandate and objectives of the Centre. Staff are expected to work in a spirit of cooperation and to actively promote harmonious relations.
Advent Lutheran Church is a multi-cultural Christian community providing English classes for newcomers to Canada, settling refugees, building community in the neighbourhood through music and the arts and encouraging the ecological well-being of the planet through organic urban agriculture and the development of the Oriole Peanut Community Garden.

Job description: Garden Coordinator - Oriole Peanut Community Garden

Status: Part Time, seasonal
Hours: 20 Hours per week April – September
....(Flexible hours and some evening/weekend work required, especially during the growing season)
Rate: $23.50 per hour
Reports to: Working Women Community Centre – Advent Lutheran Church

RESPONSIBILITIES
.
Works within a settlement and community development framework to meet the goals and objectives of the Peanut Community Garden project as follows:

Works directly with newcomer gardeners to train and support them to:
Enjoy the earth through the cultivation of a personal garden plot.
Learn skills necessary for cultivating a garden bed such as turning soil, planting, differentiating between plants, weeding, harvesting, cultivating seeds, and returning their garden to the earth after harvest.
Understand themselves as part of a larger community of gardeners and interested neighbours.
Serve other gardens when needed by volunteering to help water.
Understand and adhere to the Oriole Peanut Garden Manners and Oriole Peanut Garden Rules.

Supervises all areas of the garden, including:
Garden Shed, compost bins, grass, trees, water collection system, flower gardens, equipment, hoses and hose bibs, walkways.
Works with community gardeners and Garden Oversight Committee to plan, organize and implement activities related to the garden, including, but not limited to:
Gardener meetings, potlucks and cultural celebrations.
Summer student employee recruitment and support.
Garden Oversight Committee meetings.
Liaising with Advent Lutheran Church Property Manager.
Keeping all records related to membership, plots, meetings, etc.
Promotes and organizes education events for Gardeners on various aspects of organic gardening, including, but not limited to:
Saving Seeds, Mulching, Composting, Choosing plants for Garden Specific Zones, Taking Care of Worms, Dealing With a Damp Season / Hot Season, etc.
Actively builds and supports a mutually beneficial relationship between the community gardeners, Working Women Community Centre, Advent Lutheran Church, and the Toronto Community Garden Network (TCGN).
Acts as a liaison and promoter of the garden with various congregations and community groups who use Advent Lutheran Church throughout the week.
Collects and submits statistical and other information required for funder reports

QUALIFICATIONS
Three years experience in Community Gardening with specific experience in working with volunteer gardeners, maintaining garden beds, planting, harvesting, composting, etc.
Strong personal vision for urban, organic gardening in Toronto.
Understanding of the Community Gardening movement in the GTA.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Creative communicator and teacher.
Able to work independently and/or as a team member.
Ability to supervise a student.
Excellent organizational skills with an ability to be flexible.
Good English-language skills both verbal and written.
Understanding of the issues and assets of newcomers and immigrants.
Fluency in Farsi or Mandarin or other language related to the community is an asset.
Able to take initiative.
Willingness to listen and to learn.
Ability to work with agency and funder requirements.
Demonstrated ability to keep detailed records required for reports.
