New Horizons Community Garden

The New Horizons Community Garden is located just inside the entrance Tom Riley Park at Islington and Bloor. The garden faces the parking lot, just east of Aberfoyle Cr.

Children`s day

This multi-ethnic Bosnian community garden, named "New Horizons Community Garden" is a creation of a few talented, enthusiastic, and hard working members of the Multicultural Association of Bosnian Seniors and their Friends, a not-for profit organization whose goal is to reduce the isolation of seniors from Bosnia and the former Yugoslav regions through a variety of activities and community sharing initiatives.

In just two seasons, the gardeners have been very successful in bringing community together and sharing their knowledge with younger generations.

There were two big events in the garden in 2008.

First was the educational day for children called “The Children's Day”. The Children's Day inspired Lorraine Johnson to write her article in the magazine “Edible Toronto”,

Singing around the picnic Table

The second big event was the annual picnic, a social gathering for the members, friends, guests and sponsors. At the Picnic the representatives of the City of Toronto and the Federal Government Seniors Program gave a warm and sincere recognition to our seniors for their outstanding work in the community.

Both events were extremely popular and well attended.

I enjoyed my visit there. The members of this community garden are very generous and kind. They are skilled gardeners and all their vegetable gardens were just brimming with life. The picnic tables are not just a place to eat, but to socialize. It was a real joy to watch them, and hear them sing songs from the "old country".
