The featured garden for the month of June is: The Garden Party Hosted by Redeemer Lutheran

This community garden is located in the Bloor and Keel area. It is special, because they donate most of the food that is grown, to local food banks and soup kitchens in the area.

The Garden Party

Hosted by Redeemer Lutheran

By the Community...For the Community

The vegetable garden was started four years ago with the mission of building stronger communities, promoting volunteerism and growing healthy food for their local community.

Audrey Yates is coordinator of The Garden Party garden hosted by Redeemer Lutheran Church. The group of volunteer gardeners continue to donate the vegetables and herbs from the garden, to local charities.

They grow organic vegetables in the two garden plots that are located at the back of the church. They have many types of leafy greens, and different squash and tomatoes to mention a few. They also grow organic herbs like rosemary and mint in the new container gardens that they have created for this season.

Over the past few years they have learned many new things about keeping the volunteers, and providing a bit of the produce for them to take home. As well, they have branched out, and now are donating their produce to several soup kitchens in the area.

The majority of their vegetables and herbs are donated to food kitchens and shelters serving food to neighbours in need of healthy food. For the 2009 season, they will be donating their produce to the following charities:

  • Out of the Cold
  • St. Francis Table
  • Creating Parkedale Together
  • Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre
  • A third of the garden’s vegetables and herbs are shared amongst volunteers.
