High School Students - Internship Opportunity

Position:

  • Seeds for Change Garden Intern
  • Part-time (8-10 hours/week) from June-October

 

Seeds For Change (SFC) is a grass-roots community organization growing healthier neighbourhoods through school and community gardens. The Growing to Give Garden is a partnership project between Seeds For Change, the City of Vaughan’s Parks Operations & Forestry Department, Environmental Sustainability Office, Vaughan Fire & Rescue Service and the York Region Food Network.

  • The goals of the Garden are to:
  • 1) To provide engaging and enjoyable programming for local citizens and organizations in Vaughan who are interested in learning about how to grow food
  • 2) To expand upon the firepeople's ongoing and honorable efforts to donate non-perishable foods by donating fresh, local, organic produce for those community members in need.
  • 3) To support the City of Vaughan’s sustainability efforts.
  • 4) To build community and relationships through community gardening.
  • 5) To empower local students, youth and children to grow their own food and make healthier life choices.

Internship Details:

Growing to Give interns will volunteer at the Garden 2 days per week (every Tuesday and another day of the intern’s choice). Interns will gain critical life skills such as growing food, as well as leadership skills. Interns will participate in a multidisciplinary program where they will help plant, maintain, and harvest the garden while also helping facilitate our hands-on educational programs in exchange they will receive required volunteer hours and a portion of the harvest.

Learning:

Interns will participate in a number of different learning opportunities, throughout the growing season, aimed at teaching organic gardening and sustainable growing practices and building community around food production. Interns will train with our garden advisor and local Master Gardeners.

To Apply:

No garden experience necessary. Applicants must be committed, hardworking, positive, curious, open to the many different ways that people experience the natural world with a sense of wonder.  Applications should have a strong desire to learn, grow, and eat vegetables.   To apply please send a copy of your resume to Sabrina Malach sabrinamalach@gmail.com.

.   Ideally, applicants will be able to commit to the full growing season (May-October).  There are also opportunities for shortened or extended internships.

Applications are still being accepted, as of June 27, 2011.  Positions are limited and will be filled on a rolling basis, but many are still available.
